Chickamauga Junior Council

The Chickamauga Junior Council is an exciting opportunity for high school students to get involved in their community and learn more about local government.

The Junior Council serves three primary purposes:

  • Provide a voice for the city’s youth by allowing students to share their perspectives on community issues, policies, and goals.
  • Educate students about local government by giving them the opportunity to learn how city leadership works and to develop an appreciation for their community and its facilities.
  • Develop leadership skills by helping students gain experience as future community leaders while participating in projects and helping organize events.

 

There is no cost to join the Chickamauga Junior Council. Students must complete an application and obtain a teacher recommendation. Throughout the year, the Junior Council also participates in field trips and activities, most of which have little to no cost.

This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in leadership, community involvement, and learning more about how their city works.

Drama Club

The GL drama club offers students an opportunity to develop in the creative theater arts, including acting, set design, costumes and make-up.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

The purpose of FBLA is to provide, as an integral part of the instructional program, additional opportunities for secondary students (grades 9–12) in business and/or business-related fields to develop vocational and career supportive competencies and to promote civic and personal responsibilities.

 

The specific goals of FBLA are to:

  • develop competent, aggressive business leadership;
  • strengthen the confidence of students in themselves and their work;
  • create more interest in and understanding of American business enterprise;
  • encourage members in the development of individual projects which contribute to the improvement of home, business, and community;
  • develop character, prepare for useful citizenship, and foster patriotism; • encourage and practice efficient money management;
  • encourage scholarship and promote school loyalty;
  • assist students in the establishment of occupational goals; and
  • facilitate the transition from school to work.

 

Member Dues are $20.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)

FCA at Gordon Lee High School is a welcoming, student‑led club that is open to everyone regardless of whether they participate in sports. Each week, members come together to enjoy fun games, share food, and participate in encouraging devotions that focus on faith, character, and community. FCA provides a positive, supportive space where students can build meaningful friendships, grow spiritually, and make a difference on campus through fellowship and service. 

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)

FCCLA is a Career and Technical Student Organization that functions as an integral part of the Family and Consumer Science Education curriculum. Students who enrolled in or completed a course in Family and Consumer Science may join FCCLA.  FCCLA helps students focus on a variety of youth concerns, including parenting, family relationships, substance abuse, peer pressure, sustainability, nutrition and fitness, teen violence and career preparation for the career pathways offered at Gordon Lee High School.  Student membership is affiliated with local, state and national FCCLA.  The amount for dues is dependent on the state and national amounts.  The current year’s dues are $14.00.  

Future Farmers of America (FFA)

FFA is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

FFA develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success.

Members are future chemists, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, international business leaders, teachers and premier professionals in many career fields.

FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. It is one of the three components of agricultural education.

Fishing Club

The GLHS Fishing Team is open to students in grades 6-12 and provides an opportunity to compete in tournaments through the Northwest Georgia High School Anglers Association. Students will have the chance to participate in several spring tournaments, where they’ll compete against schools from across Northwest Georgia. They can choose to fish individually or with a partner. To participate, students must provide their own boat, and the boat captain must be at least 21 years old. The boat must also be covered by at least $300,000 in liability insurance. There is a $200 sign-up fee, which is due in the fall and non-refundable. This covers the cost of a team jersey. There will be a few school meetings and monthly meetings organized by the association to provide important tournament details. As a competitive sport, students are held to the same academic, behavioral, and athletic standards as all other GLHS athletes. This program offers a rewarding experience, with opportunities to represent GLHS and develop skills that could lead to further opportunities in the sport.

Health Occupation Students of American (HOSA)-Future Healthcare Professionals

HOSA, Future Healthcare Professionals, is a student-led professional organization designed for students interested in the healthcare field. They offer many opportunities for scholarships, leadership, competition, and service. We attend two conferences per year, one being in Atlanta, Ga. The State Leadership Conference is held in March, and students compete in a competitive event of their choice that relates to healthcare. Our HOSA chapter focuses on community service projects, raising awareness for various healthcare related issues/diseases, and fundraising for various foundations/causes. We host 2-3 blood drives per year for our community. To be a member of HOSA, the student should be very interested in healthcare as a career choice and be willing to volunteer and be involved in HOSA related activities. To be a member, dues are $40 per year. We affiliate at the state and national levels. Gordon Lee HOSA prides itself on being professional in all aspects: classroom, trips, competing, service, and character. We will have regular monthly meetings to make sure our members know what is being planned and can actively participate. We love our members and our chapter looks forward to serving you! Key Club

Key Club International is the oldest and largest service organization among high school students. Since 1925, students have learned the value of helping others by volunteering and performing acts of service in the community.  Students who wish to be considered active members of the club must participate in 50 hours of community service during an entire calendar year. If a student volunteers an average of 75 hours each of their 4 years of high school, they will receive a cord for graduation.

We participate in Backpack Blessings, which helps pack meals for needy students in the local area. Students have written over 100 Christmas cards for the less fortunate, donated dog blankets for McKamey Animal Center, and brought in needed items for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. In addition, Key Club volunteers at many local events in Chickamauga, including the candlelight tours, fall festival, wrapping Christmas presents, and so much more.  Key Club is dedicated to improving the community through participation in local community service projects. 

Key Club participates in many community service outreach projects in the local community. During Key Club International week, the school raised over 800 canned goods, which was distributed to local food banks and the needy within the community. We also participate in Backpack Blessings, which helps pack meals for needy students in the local area. Students have written over 100 Christmas cards for the less fortunate, made dog blankets for McKamey Animal Center, and brought in needed items for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. In addition, Key Club volunteers at many local events in Chickamauga, including the candlelight tours, fall festival, wrapping Christmas presents, and so much more. Multi-fandom Club

GLHS/GLMS Multi-fandom Club is a club for those interested in various fandom-based activities such as gaming (both electronic and tabletop), anime, popular television/movies/books, etc. Two of our largest activities are presenting a panel at Con Nooga every February, and several sessions of Dungeons and Dragons throughout the school year. We also meet every Thursday for anything from watching an anime, having a dance party, gaming, etc. Dues are $10.

National Honor Society (NHS) 

Membership in the National Honor Society is open to grades 10-12 and is a four-part process. Part one is based on students' academics; eligible students must have a 90+ GPA and no final grade below an 85. Part two is centered around leadership, which is considered to be anytime a student represents the school in a positive fashion (sports, band, clubs, etc.). Part three involves students' community service; students should complete 20 or more hours of community service per school year. The community service can be in conjunction with a school group, outside group, or individually. Eligibility based on parts two and three will be determined by a group of teachers known as the faculty council, which is made up of 5 teachers. Part four involves evaluating students' characters; the faculty rates an eligible student’s character on a 4-point scale, and students must average a 3 or higher.   

Spanish Club

A club for those interested in learning more about the Hispanic culture. Participants do not have to be currently enrolled Spanish. The club meets once a month to cook, do a craft, or other activities that promote cultural understanding. Dues are $5. 

The Gordon Lee High School Sporting Dog Team is an exciting and unique group where students train and compete with dogs in various sporting activities like agility, obedience, and even hunting-related tasks. This team combines the excitement of competing with the bond between handler and dog, fostering teamwork, discipline, and a love of animals. In addition, to competitions students learn about animal care, training methods, and the importance of responsibility. The team emphasizes positive reinforcement techniques, building a deep, trusting relationship between handlers and dogs.
